At the heart of the scandal lies Low Taek Jho, known to most as Jho Low, a mysterious businessman and notorious playboy. Teaming up with Prime Minister Najib Razak, Low helped exploit 1MDB, a sovereign wealth fund established in 2009 to benefit the people of Malaysia. In 2015, journalist Clare Rewcastle-Brown received leaked financial documents, setting off a global investigation that uncovered staggering sums of money being channeled into international bank accounts in support of Low’s extravagant lifestyle — including lavish properties, a private jet, a yacht, A-list celebrity parties, and the financing of the Hollywood blockbuster The Wolf of Wall Street.
